Student spotlight: Ida Plotzker, Jewish History student
“Can I say I’ve been at Touro since 1989?” Ida Plotzker laughs at her own joke. She first came to Touro decades ago to study psychology, drawn by its supportive learning environment. She returned more than three decades later, after her kids were grown, to pursue her longtime love of Jewish history.
In between, Ida raised her family and taught preschool at the yeshiva her children attended. When she retired, she went back to school for a master’s degree in Holocaust Studies.
After completing her graduate degree, Ida realized she wanted to keep learning about Jewish history and philosophy. Touro's close-knit community and online learning options made GSJS an easy choice for this lifelong learner.
“The school is truly a gem that I feel lucky to have discovered,” she says. “The readings are fascinating, the lectures engaging. It’s a happy, intellectually inspiring place to be.”
Ida recently added “the experience of a lifetime” to her academic career: a Touro study abroad course exploring Jewish history through site visits across Italy. A lifelong learner, she can’t wait to see what’s next. “As long as Touro keeps offering stimulating courses, and they don’t kick me out, I plan to hang around.”
Collaborative Programs
GSJS partners with two Touro graduate schools to help you put your Jewish studies knowledge to work in the world.
Select courses count toward both your GSJS degree and a certificate or master's from the Graduate School of Business or the Graduate School of Social Work.
MSW and Jewish Studies
This collaboration allows you to earn a master's degree in social work from GSSW and a graduate degree from GSJS, with two courses that count towards both degrees.
Through a shared-credit arrangement, you can apply two GSSW classes, The Practice of School Social Work in the Jewish Community (SSWN 785) and Social Work Leadership and Management in the Jewish Community (SSWN 796), toward your master's or PhD at GSJS.
The program is open to GSSW or GSJS students and is well suited for future school social workers; Jewish day school principals, administrators, and advisors; and professionals in Jewish communal services.
Jewish Studies and Not-for-Profit Management
This certificate offers practical business insights from GSB to complement your academic pursuit of Jewish history and culture.
The 5-course GSB program includes lessons in accounting, finance, and nonprofit leadership along with two Jewish community oriented classes, Marketing: Branding and Differentiating (MBAN 603) and Industry Capstone (MBAN 641).
Credits from these two courses count toward both the nonprofit credential and your master's or PhD at GSJS.
The certificate is open to GSJS students who are interested in going into Jewish communal leadership, educational administration, or nonprofit work. You must be enrolled at GSJS before applying to the program.
